Economics, mostly the price of fuel and labor.

Expenses exceeded revenue for too long and they couldn't nail down any investors. I really liked FLYI and hate to see them go. They were screwed from the get-go, however. They were the major regional connector "commuter" airline for United Airlines out of IAD (Dulles Int'l) until United went bankrupt. The courts allowed United to void the contract with FLYI and left them high & dry with a huge overhead (e.g. gate space at IAD and a huge fleet of brand new regional jets and more on order.) It was a noble attempt to make good under terrible circumstances, but it just didn't pan out.

Their busisness plan was based on fuel at about $30 per barrel. The airline had great ideas just bad timing.
