A "dead head" is a crewmember who is assigned to fly as a passenger on a specific flight (not working it) so they can get to another city to work where they will pick up their assigned trip sequence.

This is different from a "Non-Rev" as that is a term used for people using airine benefits to travel for their own needs, not at the companys direction. A dead heading crewmember can bump a revenue passenger off a flight, while a non-rev cannot.

BTW- Dead heads are getting paid to be on the flight, as it is a work assignment, even though they are sitting in back.

Regarding this answer from below by Aeirol 1970-

"DEADHEAD MEANS,BASICALLY When you work for the airline being pilot, and or flight attendant, you have ended your trip in one state but you live in other.so you catch the next flight home."

UHHHH NO. It's not the same! That is called COMMUTING. If it were a deadhead, the company would require you to be on the flight. Getting to & from work is on your own! I spent 7 hours getting bumped off flights getting home from work tonight while commuting. I wish I were a "deadhead" as I would have gotten on a flight! (Had to drive.)

Yes, a "Dead Head" could be a fan of the Grateful Dead, but in this case, he's a company employee (usually a pilot) being moved from one station (airport) to another for company convenience. Also called a non-rev or non-revenue passenger.

The term "Dead Head" is also used in the trucking industry, where it means having to drive an empty truck to a new location in order to pick up a load.

Dead head crew or dead heading crew is a non active crew member that is either going to a destination airport, where starts its active duty,or after an active duty as a crewmember of a flight ,goes back at its base airport for rest.

Dead head Crew time is added to the total duty time as active crew member of a flight of that day and should not exceed certain limits.

Along with the people an aircraft may also be "dead-headed" it is rare but if an aircraft is returning to service from the main maintenance base it may be flown without passengers... Example. American Airlines main maintenance base is in Tulsa OK, not a whole lot of flights out of Tulsa so the first flight out is a dead head flight

When removing wilted or dead blooms from most flowering plants (ie. dead-heading), pinch or cut bloom and its supportive stem back to the next full set of leaves on that stem. This works with geraniums, impatiens, kalanchoes, etc., even tomato plants! See back issues of Southern Living magazines under 'Garden Checklist', a section in each monthly issue. That section addresses similar questions year-round and it doesn't matter which year issue you look in, just look at the months that are applicable to your growing/blooming season. Makes for good reading in most doctor's offices or hair salon anyway, because those places usually have lots of back issues of magazines!!

I'm not sure what movie you refer to, but generally speaking, a dead head is a follower of the great Jerry Garcia and the Greatful Dead. It can also refer to the act of removing dead blossoms from a plant, but I think in the case you refer to, the former would apply. Have a greatful day.

A dead head is someone who is a big fan of Jerry Garcia and his band. It is a synonym for big supporter. Oh, by the way, Jerry's band is called The Grateful Dead. Another cool band to listen to is The Beatles.
