Harrier Jump Jet. It hoovers in one spot. It even goes backwards. It was used as a fighter in the Falklands by using it vector nozzles in forward flight ( VIFF ) to out turn opposing aircraft. It is used by USMC ( marine corp AV8B ) for ground attack and close air support. It is great at Airshows. It poses for pictures. It is just unique amongst aircraft.

If you were thinking of civil aircraft then it would have to be Concorde. It flew at twice the speed of sound and clocked up more hours at over the speed of sound than all the worlds airforces combined.

Don't you just love the people that copy and paste their answer. TO lazy to put their own opioion down. Shows much of a lack of a life they don't have.

Anyway, my opioion for the best aircraft would be the Douglas DC-3 or the military version C-47 Dakota.

It was the worlds first plane designed for commercial use for passengers. It was also used by every allied air force in WW II. Used in all parts of the world and is still flying today. There is a guy that lives down the street from me, that owns one at the local airport. He is restoring it. It is a C-47 that saw service during WW II. He has all of the paperwork and captains log since it was completed and delivered to the US Army Air Corps in 1941. He recently got the service record from the USAF to find out it was retired from active duty in 1968. It has also flew missions in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

He recently got the engines completed and I was there when he fired them up in over 10 years. It sent chills down my spine to hear those radial engines purring.

The DC-3 is the best and brightest of aviation has to offer. It paved the way for commercial flight. It also paved the way for companies to send cargo around the world.

Also I was picked by my unit while in the US Army to recreate the Normandy D-Day Parachute drop over France in 1994. It was amazing to meet some of the vets who jumped out of them in 1944. I have flown in C-47 three times and get emotinoal still after so long.

F-86 Sabre. One of the best aircraft made. Used by Canada, Germany, UK and of course the US. There was close to 10,000 of these built. Some are still flying...

B-52 Stratofortress.

For more than 40 years B-52 Stratofortresses have been the backbone of the manned strategic bomber force for the United States. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory. This includes gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions. Updated with modern technology the B-52 will be capable of delivering the full complement of joint developed weapons and will continue into the 21st century as an important element of our nation's defenses. Current engineering analyses show the B-52's life span to extend beyond the year 2040.

Presently: Boeing 747.

Flight

The 747 fleet has logged more than 35 billion statute miles (56 billion km) - enough to make 74,000 trips to the moon and back.

The 747 fleet has flown 3.5 billion people - the equivalent of more than half of the world's population.

The 747-400ER range is approximately 7,720 statute miles (14,297 km).

A 747-400 typically takes off at 180 mph (290 km/h), cruises at 565 mph (910 km/h) and lands at 160 mph (260 km/h).

For a typical international flight, one 747 operator uses about 5.5 tons (5,000 kg) of food supplies and more than 50,000 in-flight service items.

FUTURE: AIRBUS A380

The A380 will carry more passengers over longer distances, allowing for projected passenger growth worldwide and helping to ease an increasingly congested environment. It will achieve this without increasing the number of air traffic movements and without negatively impacting the environment, thanks to significantly reduced noise and emissions levels.

Taking a clean-sheet design for airlines’ operational needs of tomorrow, Airbus developed the A380 as the most spacious and efficient airliner ever conceived. This 555-seat aircraft will deliver an unparalleled level of comfort while retaining all the benefits of commonality with Airbus’ other fly-by-wire aircraft Families.

Thirty years after launching the world’s first twin-aisle, twin-engine jetliner, Airbus is preparing to introduce its A380 as the first true double-deck passenger airliner for the long-range market. The A380 offers unprecedented levels of productivity, efficiency and economics in passenger service, while the A380-800F cargo version is to be the first commercial freighter with three full cargo decks.

F-16 FALCON

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a compact, multirole fighter aircraft. It is highly maneuverable and has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack. It provides a relatively low-cost, high-performance weapon system for the United States and allied nations.

In an air combat role, the F-16's maneuverability and combat radius (distance it can fly to enter air combat, stay, fight and return) exceed that of all potential threat fighter aircraft. It can locate targets in all weather conditions and detect low flying aircraft in radar ground clutter. In an air-to-surface role, the F-16 can fly more than 500 miles (860 kilometers), deliver its weapons with superior accuracy, defend itself against enemy aircraft, and return to its starting point. An all-weather capability allows it to accurately deliver ordnance during non-visual bombing conditions.
