I have been given a research topic for school on the F-111 strike aircraft. But under where it says what to research, it says to explain the special design features of the F-18 Super Hornet and what you neede to become a F-18 pilot amongst other points that dont mention any aircraft. Is the F-18 like part of the F-111 family or somwething like that or would this be a mistake?

Thanks

The F-111 and the F-18 are completely different aircraft. The F-111 was an earlier generation fighter/bomber designed for the USAF (there was a carrier based version for the US Navy that was never purchased); the F-18 is strictly a carrier based fighter.

A better comparison (and possibly your teacher's intention) would be the F-111 and the F-14, which are much more similar, both having variable sweep wings, etc.

Well the two aircraft are very different in both appearance and mission orientation. I will give you the differences below and some links to help you out.

The McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet: This plane was designed in the late 1970's for the United States Navy as a Multi Role fighter to replace the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. The F-18 is light weight and agile dual engines dual fins and unswept wings. It is used for fleet defense and can be used for offense also. It is Carrier and land capable giving a greater use in various roles. Can be crewed by one or two crew men. To become an F-18 Hornet pilot you must go to the Naval academy and then apply for flight status on the F-18. Then during training you must accomplish a certain number of Carrier landings before you can be given full flight status. If you fail you are washed out of the flight program and have to wait at least a year or more to try again. The F-18 Hornet is used only be the United States Navy and United States Marines. The F-18 is also exported to some countries like Australia, Switzerland, Kuwait and 4 other countries. There are some other countries that may buy but the sales haven't come trough.

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark: This plane is designed as an Interdiction Bomber/Elint plane. It is larger than the F-18 Hornet and far faster than the F-18, and has a greater weapons load. It also has 2 engines but one stabilizer rather than 2 on the F-18 Hornet. The F-111 has what is called Swing Wing or Variable Sweep, meaning that the wings can be moved fulling forward for slow fights and take off and landing. Or Swept back for Super Sonic flight. This allows greater weapons loads and substantially better range. This plane is piloted by a crew of 2 seated side by side, and one of the crew has what looks like a TV set which is used to guide Air to Ground Missiles to the intended target. The Elint version of the F-111 uses special electronics to jam enemy radar and other communication devices to make it harder for the enemy to fight and see incoming aircraft. This plane is only by the United States Air Force and has now been retired from service. It is not Carrier capable though there was an attempt made in the late 1960's, trough the mid 1970's to make one but never was purchased by the Navy. It was made for export to Australia. but has now also retired their fleet in anticipation of the F-35 to take its place. Below are some links to sites that will help you with your quest for information on both aircraft.

The F-18 and F-111 are similar aircraft. They both can carry out the same type of missions. The F-18 is a bit slower but more maneuverable and advanced, The F-111 is faster but not as maneuverable so it can not do too well in defending itself in air to air combat.

The F-18 is a multi-role fighter designed to be maneuverable and able to carry out all missions. It is designed for the Navy and can launch and land on an aircraft carrier. It has a crew on one or a crew of town, with the pilot sitting in the front and the RIO directly behind him. To become a F-18 pilot you have to join the branch of military that operates it. The USN and USMC for the United States. Then you have to be a bad ass and pass all of the tough tests they throw at you.

The F-111 is designed to be a strike attack aircraft. It has ground mapping radar which enables it to fly real low under the enemies radar to sneak in and attack targets. It has a crew of two with the pilot and WSO sitting side by side. It is not designed to fight other aircraft but can if it has to. The F-111 is operated by the Air Force.

The two aircraft have nothing to do with each other. I'm guessing that your instructor was preparing a bunch of different assignment sheets, editing just the aircraft, and gave you a mixed-up set of instructions.

Ask your instructor to confirm which aircraft he/she wants you to work on.

The F-18 is a highly effective Navy fighter.

The F-111 was one of the worst cobbled together heaps of compromise ever to sprout wings. It became way too big and heavy to work as a fighter, and is now relegated to dropping bombs.

It began in WW one pilots carried bombs up and threw them out of their planes and there are memories relating to the chinese language dropping bombs from kites (released via a 2d string). So relatively in case you may get it up interior the air you could drop it on people. for the period of WW one they found out that they could placed bombs on racks exterior to the airplane and something is as they are announcing heritage. present day fighter plane have exterior racks that permit bombs to be fastened. i individually sense that this an version on WW 2 fighter bombers or dive bombers, quickly agile plane to drop bombs in floor attack. Napalm (gelled gasoline) is the pay load of a bomb no longer the bomb itself, it relatively is dropped from any style plane. quickly and coffee to keep away from the explosions or extreme and gradual
