The Community Guidelines, which you agree to when you join this forum, clearly state that questions should be posted in the proper category.

Flight Simulator is the name of a VIDEO GAME manufactured by Microsoft to be played on a home PC for the entertainment of the GAMERS that play it. Questions about it do not belong in the AIRCRAFT section.

Politely asking GAMERS to correctly post their Flight Simulator questions in the ONLINE & VIDEO GAME section has been ignored. So to maintain the integrity of the AIRCRAFT section your question will be reported as a violation of the Community Guidelines.

I recently got FSX and love the realistic scenery. Of course, I also just got a new computer with a dual core processor and am running it near max settings. On my slightly older computer, I had to run it on minimum display settings, in which case it wasn't much different than FS2004. If you have a recent computer, good graphics card, and 13GB of free hard disk space, then by all means get FSX. The worst that happens is you have to cut back on some of the settings. I see no downside to FSX. As far as I know, nothing got worse. And some of the special visual effects are incredible if your computer can handle them. If you go with FSX, be sure to download the service pack. Also, (I believe with either), there are some 3rd party add-ons that will improve your experience if you're willing to spend the money: FSForce for force feedback (the force feedback in MSFS is so bad that it's more realistic without it), and Radar Contact for better ATC. Just to name a couple.

you have to understand coding and stuff like that before you can use things that are made for earlier versions in later versions of games.. such as FS2004 into FSX... there are certain modifications you have to make to certain files in the game before you can play with them in FSX.

Some changes are compatible, some aren't. If the modifications come from someone else, go by what they say. If you are making modifications yourself, and you don't know if they are compatible with FSX, then you should assume that they are not.

I suggest using a forum for flight simulator questions. I've found that flightsim.com is a pretty good one. They have specific categories for all versions of FS, and you should get lots of responses.

Putting this question in the Yahoo Answers games category is nothing but a waste of time and points. It would get quickly lost in the hordes of questions about all the other games.

GAMING question, NOT AIRCRAFT QUESTION.
