Airports have crossing runways, taxiways, holding points, penalty boxes and so on that can be confusing unless you frequent that airport, even though everything is clearly marked.

When runway intersections and taxiways come together, there is increased chance of someone blundering onto or near to an active runway.

BOS, ORD, BWI, PVD, LAS, and EWR are some airports that need extra vigilance when taxiing.

Some pilots simply miss the hold short instructions. Others don't completely clear the runway after landing which prevents someone else from landing or taking off. Some fail to land and hold short (LAHSO). And sometimes, you just misunderstand what the controller is telling you to do.

All of the latest Jepps charts have the runway incursion "hot spots" highlighted on their charts to help pilots avoid these incursions.

it is not a stupid question as that's a significant difficulty. maximum incursions are led to by potential of frequent aviation plane, and specific, pilot inattention. from time to time they're led to by potential of controller errors, yet that's uncommon. the nice and cozy button is which you will desire to pay interest, and by no potential bypass a carry short line till you're confident you have a clearance. It takes place greater at specific airports, and that they even mark the worst aspects on the chart. My suggestion may well be to stay far from greater beneficial airports till you have some adventure, in any different case you're with an instructor. Take a while and be certain you recognize your taxi clearance. seek for different plane on very final, even once you're cleared for takeoff. pay attention on frequency to what different plane are doing. If uncertain, ask ATC returned.

Cudos to tarkill for such a detailed and correct answer :-)

Since not many people outside of airline circles (no pun intended) understand airport codes, here's a quick "translation" so to speak.

BOS Boston, MA (Logan International)

ORD Chicago, IL (O' Hare International, not to be confused with Chicago Midway, which is MDW)

BWI Baltimore, MD (Baltimore/Washington International)

PVD Providence, RI (TF Green State Airport)

LAS Las Vegas, NV (Mc Carran International)

EWR Newark, NJ (Newark Liberty International)

Airports are always closeing some taxiways or doing some construction work,,,, i would have to say anyone doing construction is the biggest risk as plates arent updated a lot of times to even reflect theres a new taxiway, but thats not jeppson problem most the time
