The worlds fastest commercial airliner was Concorde which could do over twice the speed of sound (faster than many fighter planes), but they were taken out of service two years ago. They could get across the Atlantic (London to New York) in three hours, however they were noisey on take off and not very big inside.

SR-71 is the fastest air-breathing airplane. It will go to Mach 3.35/1,906 knots/2,193 mph/3,530 km/h. There's a myth and lore section about the Blackbird on the Wikipedia link below.

SR 71 Blackbird, Will do in excess of mach 9, speed of sound is 720 miles per hour, that comes to 6,480miles per hour. Flying at over 100.000 feet. top speed is still clasified. This plane was built by the Skunk Works. When a Missile was fired at one once, the pilot reported passing mach 9 by radio.

Let me throw this one at ya. The NASA X-43 is and experimental aircraft design that has already been recorded at speeds near (and I think past) mach 5. It is used to test the ram and scram type engines for future earth and space travel. It travels so fast that they don't bother to slow the test planes down, they just let the unmanned planes burn up. They have pictures of them turning into shooting stars as they over heat. www.nasa.com check the future out!
